I think the plays were fifty-fifty romantic suicides and 47 Ronin-type warrior suicides. Although maybe there were more plays total with romantic suicides, but only two suicides in each, but the 48 suicides (counting the original lord's forced suicide) in Chushingura tipped the total suicide balance in favor of non-romantic motivations. ;)
