I've gotten hooked on KuroFai fic, but I find that the characterization of Fai makes or breaks the fic for me. Too many fic writers treat him as an uncomplicated emotional type, all smiles and goofball nicknames, without the deep-seated psychological issues just a millimeter below the surface. The best fic writers balance the two aspects of his character. I was watching the dub of the anime the other night, and I was interested to see that in the Chunyan arc, the dub signals that Fai has a harder edge than one might suspect. He refers to torture at one point, while the subtitles only have him mention taking a hostage, and gets a reaction from Kurogane.
