Yuletide nominations

OMG! I am already getting so exciting by continually refreshing the list of nominated fandoms. Also, I am trying to see if someone else will nominate one of the fandoms I did, because mine currently only have one vote each, and I just thought of one more I wanted to add!

Right now, I have nominated Cruel Intentions (skanky rich white teenagers playing mind games!), Honey and Clover (I am sure no one is surprised), Ellen Kushner's story "The House of Nine Doors," Nana, obscure yaoi manga Kawaii Hito (mostly just because I am a sucker for the unrequited love of the two side characters in Extra 02), and Lust, Caution (movie). So the movie hasn't even come out yet! But it will be out in a week, and it is NC-17 with Tony Leung and a planned assassination and angsty sex, and I feel very certain that once I see it, I will be dying for fic!

But I am sad because no one has nominated Her Majesty's Dog or Tramps Like Us/Kimi wa petto yet! And unsure if Count Cain is Cain Saga/Godchild!

Also, I am dying to nominate the song "The Queen and the Soldier," so I'm trying to decide which fandom to swap it with, since I seriously doubt anyone else will nominate the song.

By the way, this is my not-so-subtle way of attempting to get someone else to nominate either the song or one of the above fandoms that I already nominated so I can nominate the song ;).

To clarify: I'll totally nominate Nana if you give me a list of character names to enter, since I don't have the manga lying around (and I don't want to go looking, since I've only read the first volume & don't want to spoil myself.)

Whoo! You are awesome! I think the names should be ok; they were already filled in when I picked it the first time around.

(also EEEEE! I hadn't realized you were reading it too!!!!)

Well, like I said, I just started. And then I couldn't find any more Nana (it's all on hold at the library) so I started reading Paradise Kiss to hold me over... I will neither confirm nor deny that I cried, is all I'm sayin'. ^_^

Awwww, Paradise Kiss! I'm also happy to see it nominated for Yuletide.

I love Yazawa Ai so much, and I wish more of her stuff were translated over here.

I nominated Paradise Kiss! I'm not sure if I'm actually going to request it or not, though. I really like all six things I nominated, plus Ugly Betty, which I knew someone else would nominate so I didn't have to waste a slot on, but now I'm going to have to pare it down to four for the sign-ups... *wibbles*

[identity profile] springgreen.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay!

I'm still completely undecided about what to request! I keep changing my mind! I'm pretty sure Nana and Honey and Clover have guaranteed spots, but everything else changes by the second.

I have three that I'm sure on (Transamerica (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transamerica), Trumpet (http://www.amazon.com/Trumpet-Novel-Jackie-Kay/dp/0375704639/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-1389490-0671225?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1189686710&sr=8-1), and Ma Vie en Rose (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ma_Vie_en_Rose)), but it's the fourth spot I wibble over... On the one hand, George/Isabella would mean I have a 100% chance of getting fic about trans characters (as would a request for Alexis from Ugly Betty), but on the other hand, I've been jonesing for something set in Max Brooks' World War Z universe. Arrrrrgh!

Meanwhile, I need to finish the Nana fic I'm writing as a last-minute NYR or I won't be able to sign up at all!

Ooooo. I encourage George/Isabella out of purely selfish reasons! And Nana fic! Yay more Nana fic! (what prompt are you working from)

[identity profile] kyuuketsukirui.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Of the three prompts there, I think the one that best fits is "Melymbrosia - Nana Komatsu/Nana Osaki - Friendship or femslash okay". Yours didn't say if you were okay with femslash or not, and this is Nana/Ren with her having dreams/fantasising about Hachi (I do hate that there is no way to differentiate between their names when writing in English!) and the other one had no details at all, which always makes me hesitant.

Ohhhhh interesting! For the record, I am ok with basically everything (except possibly "Shouji was so right" fic, but I do not see anyone writing that)! But that doesn't mean you have to write for me! I cheer Nana stories on in general!

Well, 'Godchild' is the name of half of the Count Cain series, so I'd say yes.
ext_6116: (Default)

[identity profile] springgreen.livejournal.com 2007-09-20 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, hey, they corrected the title! Before it was just "Count Cain," which is a little confusing because Viz has it as Cain Saga/Godchild, and the Japanese has been translated as both "Earl Cain" and "Count Cain."

[personal profile] franzeska 2007-09-20 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. Yeah, I saw that that one was mentioned by name. I'd have left a comment, but I figured you were reading the community already.

'Godchild' is just the name of the second half, no? AFAIK, there aren't any other manga series that could be translated as any of those three titles, but it's nice that they made it a little clearer.

[identity profile] springgreen.livejournal.com 2007-09-25 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, yeah, I have been soo behind on my flist.

I think Godchild is just the name of the second half. Or it's just the name that Viz picked for the second half. Or something! It is a little confusing, and it's not like Viz's decision to release Godchild before releasing Cain Saga helped any!

It's not just Viz. See, I haven't actually been reading manga in English since before this big publishing wave. I bought one of the Godchild volumes in Japanese years ago because I could read the title easily. (Goddo Chailudo or something in katakana) I always get all confused when things are released here since I only know the original titles (or whatever's on the cover of the Japanese volumes since the title isn't always that obvious). I wish it were easier for me to look things up--I tend to buy whatever used manga looks interesting and then realize that I have book 3 out of 12 or something.

Oh I know! It is so frustrating to have to re-figure out titles when it goes from one language to another! I used to read manga in Chinese when I was in Taiwan, and when the manga boom hit here, I had an incredibly difficult time figuring out what was what. Especially because they categorize series by title here, so I couldn't just go by transliterated author name.

Re: Lust, Caution--oh! The poster for that has been in the "Coming Soon" window of the movie theater down the block for ages, & I never really got around to figuring out what it would be about. But it sounds tasty, yay! (And I've been waiting for something to come to that theater that I wanted to see since I quit my job, since my coworkers gave me gift certificates for it.)

EEEEE! Also, it is set in 1920s Shanghai!!!!!!!!!

Exclamation point!

I have been looking forward to this ever since I saw the preview a few months ago because 1920s Shanghai! With actual Chinese people as opposed to rich white expats emotastically suffering as China undergoes political upheaval!

just saw "Lust, Caution".

It's...slow. And I don't know, it really left an impression, but some people don't seem to like it.

Yeah, I've been hearing a lot of mixed reviews, but I think I'll see how it is anyway. Plus, worse come to worse, I can ogle at all the period details.
